Using Parts Work in Therapy

Parts work is a way of looking at the mind that assumes we all have different “parts” inside us, rather than just one single voice. These parts can show up as the driven part that pushes to get things done, the worried part that imagines worst-case scenarios, or the younger part that still feels hurt or afraid. Thinking in terms of parts can make it easier to understand why someone might feel pulled in opposite directions, even when they’re competent and self-aware.

In this approach, patterns like self-criticism, people-pleasing, freezing, or overworking are seen as strategies parts developed to try to keep a person safe or accepted. Instead of asking, “Why am I like this?” the question becomes, “When did this part learn to respond this way, and what is it trying to protect me from?” This shift can soften shame and open the door to more compassion for one’s own reactions.

Therapy that uses parts work often invites people to slow down and notice which parts are showing up in a given moment—how they think, how they feel in the body, and what they tend to do. Over time, the aim is to build a steadier, kinder inner relationship with these parts. The goal is not to get rid of them, but to help them relax out of extreme roles so that there is more room for choice, flexibility, and a sense of being on one’s own side.
