Genuine & Person Centered

Person-Centered Therapy in Tucson + Online Throughout Arizona

Person-centered therapy starts with the idea that you are the expert on your own life. You do not need someone to tell you who you are, what you should feel, or what your next step needs to be.

Instead, therapy becomes a place to think out loud, make sense of what is happening, and sort through the parts of your experience that may feel tangled, uncertain, or difficult to name.

A Genuine Working Relationship

A person-centered approach is grounded in a real, collaborative relationship between therapist and client. It means I take your perspective seriously, listen closely, and bring curiosity rather than judgment to what you share.

It also means I show up as a genuine person. Therapy does not need to feel stiff, overly clinical, or like you are being analyzed from a distance. We can be thoughtful, practical, honest, and human while still doing meaningful work.

Person-centered therapy is traditionally built around three key qualities in the therapeutic relationship: empathy, genuineness, and nonjudgmental acceptance.

You Set the Direction

You may come to therapy with a specific problem you want to solve. You may also arrive knowing that something feels off, but not yet have clear language for it. Both are useful starting points.

A person-centered approach makes room for what is most important to you rather than forcing your experience into a preset agenda.

That might include:

  • Anxiety, overthinking, and emotional overwhelm

  • ADHD-related challenges with focus, follow-through, or self-criticism

  • Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and difficulty trusting yourself

  • Relationship patterns, communication, and boundaries

  • Burnout, changing priorities, and life transitions

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself, your needs, or what you want next

The focus can shift as your needs shift. Some sessions may be reflective and exploratory; others may be more practical and focused on a decision, relationship, or next step.

More Than Just Talking

Person-centered therapy is sometimes misunderstood as simply having someone listen. Being heard matters, but this approach is not passive.

When there is room to speak honestly without being judged, you can often notice patterns more clearly. You may become better able to name what you feel, recognize what you need, and make choices that fit your actual values rather than reacting automatically to pressure, fear, or other people’s expectations.

A person-centered foundation also works well alongside more structured methods, such as parts work, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, CBT for ADHD, mindfulness practices, and solution-focused strategies. The relationship provides the foundation; the specific tools can be adjusted based on what would be most useful.

What This Can Look Like

In therapy, we might slow down a moment that has been bothering you and look at what is underneath it. We may notice a pattern in the way you respond to stress, relationships, conflict, work demands, or your own inner critic.

You will not be expected to perform therapy correctly, arrive with a perfectly organized story, or have an answer to every question. The work begins with what is present and develops from there.
